Martin McCool, a resident and farmer of the Second District, was born in 1819 in Pennsylvania. His father, Joseph McCool, was born about 1786, in the same State, but immigrated to Russellville, Ky., in 1825, where he engaged in the hatter’s trade until his death, in 1830. The mother was Elizabeth (Yencyle) McCool, born in 1790 in Pennsylvania, and died in 1845 at Hopkinsville, Ky. Our subject remained with his father until he was fifteen years old; then served an apprenticeship of five years at the tanner’s trade, and then came to Haywood County and started a tannery at Old Wesley, near what is now Stanton Depot, and continued the business eight years. In 1848 he bought the farm where he now lives, two miles north of Dancyville and twelve miles south of Brownsville. In 1844 he married Martha E., daughter of Julian and Docia Stanley, of Kentucky. They have had eleven children: Martha E., wife of Dr. James Rawlins; Ann Eliza, wife of G. T. Miller; Mary F., William H., James M., who died January 26, 1883; Sarah E., who died in 1877; J. Henry, Joseph S., Willie Etta, Thomas Jackson and Alice Henrietta. Mr. McCool and his wife and entire family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is also a member of the Masonic lodge at Dancyville. Before the war he was an old line Whig, but is now a Democrat. He is a self-made man of strict integrity and a kind heart, and highly respected by all who know him.
