JASPER KELSEY, M. D., of Old Lynnville, Giles Co., Tenn., was born in Maury County in 1888, son of Thomas and Hester Kelsey, natives of the Palmetto State. They were married in Tennessee in 1828, and the following children were born to their union: Mary A., William T., Susan M., Robert A., George E., Newton and Jasper. Mrs. Kelsey died in 1848, and the father in 1872. Our subject’s juvenile days were spent in attending school and assisting his parents on the farm. In I860 he began his medical studies under Drs. Beard and Harwell, of Henryville, Tenn., but on the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the Twenty-third Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, and served four years, participating in most of the principal battles of the war. After his return he resumed his medical studies, and in 1867 entered the University of Nashville, and was graduated as an M. D., from that institution in 1869. Since that time he has been actively engaged in the practice of his profession at old Lynnville, and is regarded as a reliable and successful physician. In 1868 he and Mary M. Compton were united in matrimony, and their union was blessed with the following family: Hettie E., Mary R., Annie T., Frederick W., Edna G., Alice V. and Verda Y. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and our subject is a Democrat and of Irish descent.
