Below is a family biography included in The History of Gibson County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. William Maxwell, druggist at Dyer, Tenn., was born in Illinois, January 30, 1823, son of Martin and Matilda (Greenwood) Maxwell, natives of Kentucky and Georgia respectively. William came to Tennessee with his parents when but three years old, and located with them in Carroll County, and was there educated. He taught school, and in 1845 began the study of medicine, with D. J. D. Dickenin, and two years later entered a medical college at Cincinnati, Ohio, and after attending one course of lectures returned home, and successfully practiced his profession until 1868. During this time he was engaged in the drug business at Mount Pelia, which business was destroyed during the war. He began farming in 1866, in Dyer County, in connection with his practice, and there remained until 1874. He then turned his attention to the State Grange, and was master of the same the first two terms after its organization. In 1881 he went to St. Louis, and was engaged in the general commission business, on a co-operative plan, remaining there until 1885. He returned to Dyer, and engaged in his present business. July 4, 1850, he married Martha J. McLeskey, daughter of Rev. William H. and Jemima E. McLeskey, and one daughter, Emmory C., blessed their union. Mrs. Maxwell died in November, 1878. Mr. Maxwell is a Democrat, a member of the F. & A. M., K. of H. and K. of G. R. He belongs to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
