William H. Rust is a son of John S. and Nancy R. (Cook) Rust, who were born in 1801 and 1803, respectively. They married and lived in their native State until 1826, when they came to Tennessee and located in Maury County, and after residing there about four years came to Gibson County, and made this county their permanent home. They were Methodists, and after the war the father was a Democrat; previous to that time he was a Whig. His chief calling through life was farming, though, in connection with that, he ran a threshing machine and cotton-gin. He died in 1880, and his wife in 1878. Our subject inherits Irish blood from both parents. He was born in Granville County, N. C., January 17, 1826, and, until twenty-two years of age, remained at home and assisted his father on the farm. He has worked at the carpenter’s trade chiefly, but is the owner of 190 acres of fertile land. He is a Methodist, and was an old line Whig, but since the war has been a Democrat. Since 1885 he has filled the office of constable. In 1849 he married Martha J. Senter, who was born in Gibson County, November 11, 1833. They became the parents of nine children.
