Stephen H. Russell was born in Wilson County, Tenn., on the 24th of April, 1838, and came to Gibson County with his parents in 1850. He acquired a practical education in the common schools, and has been an energetic “tiller of the soil” from boyhood. He began doing for himself with little or no capital, but, by industry and good management has accumulated considerably property, and has a good home. October 12, 1859, he was united in marriage to Dorothy N. Dunigan, daughter of John and Sarah Dunigan, and by her is the father of seven children, one daughter and six sons: John F., who died August 4, 1861; George F., William A., Addie L., Robert L., E. M., and Asa W. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the father having been a member since 1852. He is of English descent, a Democrat in politics, and belongs to the I. O. O. F. His parents were Elijah and Tempey (Grisson) Russell, of North Carolina.
