B. LAWTON WIGGINS was born in Sand Ridge, Berkeley Co., S. C., September 11, 1861. His father was James Wiggins, Esq., planter. His mother was the daughter of Col. William Millard, for many years State senator in ante bellum days. In 1868 the family moved to Spartanburg, in the northern part of the State, for educational facilities. He received, in 1880, the degree of B. A., and in 1882 that of A. M., in which year he was elected professor of ancient languages and literature, which position he still retains.
