William C. Pierce, of Fayette County, Tenn., was born in York District, S. C., September 23, 1834, and is a son of Cordelia N. and Mary (Gabbie) Pierce. The father was born in North Carolina, February 14, 1792, and died in Fayette County in 1856. The mother was born in South Carolina, August 29, 1796, and is still living at the advanced age of ninety years. They married in 1824, and in 1837 moved to Fayette County, Tenn., and settled seven miles west of Somerville. The father was engaged in agricultural pursuits all of his life; he was a sound Democrat and with his wife belonged to the Presbyterian Church. Our subject was the sixth of seven children; he was but an infant when his parents moved to Fayette County, and has since made it his home. In 1865 he bought a farm nine miles west of Somerville and moved to it the same year. Fifteen years later he exchanged this farm for one six miles west of Somerville, where he now resides. Mr. Pierce began life rather poor, but is now, as a result of his own efforts, in comfortable circumstances, owning 400 acres of land, a fine cotton-gin, etc. January 3, 1861, he married Miss Sallie Castleton, born in Alabama, June 24, 1837; four sons and five daughters have been born to them; one of each is dead. In 1862 Mr. Pierce entered the Confederate service, enlisting in Company B, Twelfth Tennessee Cavalry and joined Forrest’s command, where he remained until a few months before the close of the war, and was in all of the engagements his regiment was in; but he was taken sick in the winter of 1865 and unable to again enter the service. Politically he is a Democrat, and with his wife and one of his daughters belongs to the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Pierce contributes freely of his means to the Church. He is a successful farmer and a worthy member of society.
