John T. Watkins was born in Fayette County in February, 1853, and is the only one living of a family of two sons and a daughter, born to Benjamin and Sallie (Winfrey) Watkins. The father was a Virginian; he married in Fayette County and engaged in agricultural pursuits until a short time before his death when he sold his property in Fayette County and moved to Arkansas, where he died in 1861, the mother having died in our subject’s infancy. John T. Watkins accompanied his father to Arkansas and after his death made his home with a relative in Texas until 1870, when he returned to Fayette County and located on his present farm of 675 acres, six miles northwest of Somerville. In 1880 Mr. Watkins married Sallie Salmon, a native of Fayette County, and two daughters have been born to their marriage, both living: Ethel and Fannie Kent. Mr. Watkins is one of the energetic, progressive citizens of the county; he owns a nice estate, is liberal in disposition and honest in all things, and a man of good social position.
