Below is a family biography included in The History of Fayette County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. John D. Sale, a prominent physician of Moscow, Fayette Co., Tenn., was born in Madison County, Ala., March 10, 1819, and is a son of Dudley and Mancy (Hatcher) Sale. The father was born in Amherst County, Va., in 1780, and died in Madison County, Ala., in 1886. The mother was a native of Elbert County, Ga., born in 1787 and died in Madison County, Ala., in 1843. Our subject was the sixth of twelve children, was educated at La Grange College, Ala., and at the University at Nashville, Tenn., then commenced the study of medicine, and after reading two years under Dr. George Wharton of Meridianville, Ala., he went in the fall of 1839 to the Cincinnati Medical College, and took his first course of lectures. In 1840 he entered the Louisville Medical College, where he received his diploma in 1841. After graduating he remained in the hospital at Louisville during the summer of 1841, and the next winter located at Moscow, Fayette County, and commenced the practice of medicine; two and a half years later he moved to Mount Pleasant, Marshall Co., Miss., where he was the leading physician of the county for twenty-five years, carrying a larger practice than any other physician in the county. In the winter of 1869-70 he moved back to Fayette County, and still continues his practice. For sixteen years, in connection with his professional duties, he has been successfully engaged in farming—he owns 360 acres of land in Fayette County and several lots in Memphis. Dr. Sale has been married twice, first to Miss Susana M. Martin, born in Louisville, Ky., in 1821. (A son and a daughter were born to them; the son died.) She died in Mississippi in 1867. They were married in 1842. June, 1869, he married Mrs. L. M. (Meux) Street, who was born in Haywood County, Tenn., in 1835 and by this marriage Dr. Sale has three daughters. He is a Democrat and with his wife and three children belongs to the Methodist Church. His first wife was also a devout Methodist.
