John A. Farley, citizen and farmer of Fayette County, Tenn., was born in Laurens Co., S. C., August 8, 1808, and was a son of Thompson and Frances (Whitlow) Farley, who were natives of Virginia of English descent. The father was born in 1765 and died in 1850, in Shelby County, Tenn. The mother was born in 1777 and died in South Carolina, February 3, 1826. They had married in South Carolina, in 1804. The father came to Tennessee in 1835 and spent the rest of his life with his two daughters, who were living in the State. He was a successful farmer. Our subject was the third of six children; he received a good education and quite early commenced farming. In the winter of 1844-45 he came to Tennessee and settled in Fayette County, twenty-six miles west of Somerville, and purchased a section of land, and has since resided in the county, and by his own efforts has made a handsome estate, now owning 1,000 acres of land in Fayette and Shelby Counties, and in Marshall County, Miss. March 14, 1837, he married Susan Davis, who was born in Laurens County, S. C., April 26, 1819, and they have six children—two sons and four daughters; one of each is dead. Mr. Farley is a Democrat and a worthy member of the Christian Church as his wife is also. He contributes liberally to the church and all charitable enterprises, and has been a very useful citizen.
