J. H. Garnett, a farmer and merchant residing in Fayette County, was born April 12, 1834, in Franklin County, Tenn., and is one of three sons and two daughters born to Eli and Sallie (Robinson) Garnett, our subject and a brother being the only ones living. The father was a native of Virginia, and came to Franklin County, Tenn., when young and married there, the mother being a native of that county. He was in the shoe trade and made that county his home, with the exception of a few years’ residence in Missouri, until his death in 1855. The mother died in 1835. When our subject was sixteen years old he was employed by a merchant at Lockensville, Ala., for two years; he then returned to Franklin County, but in a few years moved to Hardeman County, Tenn., and made it his home until the war, when he enlisted in Gen. Forrest’s calvary, but owing to bad health was discharged after the battle of Shiloh. After the war Mr. Garnett was for a while employed by a merchant at La Grange. Tenn., and afterward by a Memphis firm. In December, 1869, he married Miss Frances Rutledge of Fayette County, and turned his attention to agricultural pursuits, locating on his present farm of 1,500 acres, on which he established a general merchandise store in 1879, chiefly for the convenience of his own plantation, and where the post-office has recently been established that is called Yum Yum. One son and five daughters were born to his marriage; one daughter died in infancy. Those living are named Minnie, Mamie, Mattie, John H. and Elmer. Mr. Garnett is an F. & A. M. He is a Democrat, and with his family belongs to the Methodist Church. He is one of the prosperous and substantial citizens of Fayette County.
