George W. S. Johnson was born in Iredell County, N. C., November 7, 1822, and is a son of Curtis and Mary (Sharpe) Johnson, both natives of Iredell County, N. C. Our subject is of Scotch-Irish descent. The father was born in 1795 and died in Fayette County in 1858. The mother was born in 1793 and died in same county in 1881; they married in 1817, and in 1835 they moved to Missouri, and in 1837 to Fayette County and settled eight miles southeast of Somerville and lived twelve or fourteen years; then moved seven miles south of Somerville, where they died. Both parents were consistent members of the Methodist Church. Our subject was the third of four children, and after finishing his education commenced farming. In 1845 his wife’s father gave him a good farm containing 115 acres; in 1859 he sold it and bought another farm, and now owns 390 acres of the best land in Fayette County. January 9, 1845, he married Miss Mary Stidham, born in Fayette County, March 3, 1825; her father was one of the pioneers of Fayette County. They have no children. Mr. Johnson is not a member of any church, but accepts the Christian faith, and is in every respect a strictly moral man and contributes liberally to the Methodists, his wife being an earnest and influential member of that church, and it being his church by preference. He is a sound Democrat and a man possessing many noble traits of character.
