T. R. Moss, M. D., of Dyersburg, was born at Chestnut Bluff, now Crockett County, November 13, 1858. He is the son of Rev. John H. Moss, who was born in Bedford County, Va., in 1818. At the age of eight years he came with his father, Henry Moss, to Williamson County, Tenn. He then worked upon a farm until 1838, after which, for eight years, he served as a clerk in a mercantile house in Franklin and Nashville. In 1846 he established a general store at Chestnut Bluff, Crockett County, where he continued for twenty years. In 1863 he entered the ministry, and continued in the service of the Lord until 1877, when he began the practice of law. In 1869 he moved to Shelby County, Tenn., and after various other locations settled in the town, where he has since resided. In 1878 he was appointed assistant attorney-general, and was meeting with success in the legal profession when four years ago he was stricken with paralysis. Since that date he has been engaged in the insurance business. He is a life member of the Bible Revision Association of the United States. January 2, 1848, he married Martha A. Nash, a great granddaughter of Dr. Nash, for whom Nashville was named. She died September 5, 1862, leaving six children: John T., Joseph W. B., Robert F. C., Nannie (Mrs. John Brown), James A. and Thomas R. On January 29, 1863, Mr. Moss was united in marriage with Mrs. Mahala Foster, by whom he had two children: Martha A. and Emma A. Thomas R. Moss, when only two months old was taken by Thomas Miller and wife, with whom he remained until after attaining his majority. He then began the study of medicine under Dr. J. B. York, with whom he remained eighteen months. In September, 1879, he entered the medical department of the Vanderbilt University, from which in due time he received the title of M. D. He then located at Dyersburg, where he has since built up a large and lucrative practice. In the fall of 1884, in order to more fully perfect himself in his profession he entered the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, of New York, from which at the close of the session he received a diploma. On January 7, 1886, he married Mary Lewis Parker, of Haywood County.
