Dr. R. N. Fryer, one of the most successful physicians of Dyer County, resides at Newbern, Tenn., and was one of seven children, four now living. He was born in Guilford County, N. C., May 5,1831, his parents being John and Martha (Landreth) Fryer. His father was born in North Carolina in 1804, and was married there, and in 1838 moved to Henry County, Tenn.; was a farmer by occupation, and died in 1842. Dr. Fryer’s mother was also a native of North Carolina, born in 1802, and died in 1876. Dr. Fryer was educated in the district schools. In 1858 he commenced reading medicine under Dr. H. C. Fryer, of Decaturville, Tenn., and after spending some time in his office, attended the medical department of the Nashville University, and in 1862 located at Newbern. In the winter of 1869-70, he took another course of lectures and graduated at the Nashville University. Dr. Fryer has responded cheerfully to all calls for his professional services, and has perhaps the most extensive practice in Dyer County. November, 1864, he married Miss M. A., daughter of David C, and Isabel Weakley. Mrs. Fryer was born in Dickson County, Tenn., 1838, and died January 2, 1885. They had one daughter, Mattie B., wife of T. F. King, of Dyersburg. Dr. Fryer is a liberal, public-spirited man, and has done a great deal for the good of his town, especially in assisting religious enterprises. He has taken the highest degree in the Masonic Lodge, and has been an elder for years in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He owns a valuable farm, and beautiful home, just north of Newbern.
