Isaac C. Mitchell, a prominent citizen and farmer of the Fifteenth District, and son of John and Mary (Wright) Mitchell, was born in Maury County in 1825, and is one of nine children, four of whom are living: William, John, Minerva (wife of Michael Flowers, of Gibson County,) and our subject. His father was a native of Virginia, and when a boy moved with his parents to Maury County, where they purchased land and remained until their death. Our subject’s father was a farmer. He married in Maury County and died there in 1837. He was a private soldier in the war of 1812. His wife was a native of North Carolina, and died in Gibson County in 1872. Mr. I. C. Mitchell’s father died when he was only two years old, and his mother raised him. They moved to Gibson County in 1833; he was educated there, and in 1847 married Miss Mary A. Reed, daughter of Robert and Mary Reed, of Gibson County. They had six children, four now living: William L. A.; Minerva, wife of J. F. Nooe (deceased); Robert M. and Sarah Ella. Mr. Mitchell farmed as a tenant in Gibson County two years, then moved to Obion County, purchased 100 acres of land in the Eleventh District, and erected a log house on it, where he lived eight years. But he was both industrious and ambitious to add to his property and provide the comforts of life for his family, and soon added another 100 acres to his original tract, and many improvements to his home. The house is built right on the line dividing Obion and Dyer Counties, his land being in both counties, and within a few steps of Trimble. Mr. Mitchell is a strictly upright man, a good citizen and neighbor, and both his wife and himself are influential members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and he is a Mason. His first presidential vote was cast for Gen. Taylor.
