Below is a family biography included in The History of Dyer County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. George W. Pierce, Jr., was born in Dyer County, in 1854, and engages in farming and stock dealing. He is one of a family of nine children, seven of whom are living: Albert J., of Texas; Thomas J.; Henry, of Davidson County; Mrs. Mary Powell, G. W., Benjamin F. and Samuel J. His grandfather was a native of Ireland. His father, Albert G. Pierce, was born in Middle Tennessee in 1814, and had no early educational advantages, but, by his own energy and application acquired a great deal of general information, and became one of Dyer County’s most efficient business men. When he was twelve years of age he moved to Dyer County with his parents, and when twenty-two years of age married Miss Adelaide McCullough, who was a few years his junior, and a sister of Brig.-Gen. McCullough, of the Mexican war, and who was commander of the Texas Rangers in the civil war, and was mortally wounded at Elkton, Mo., in 1862. Mr. Pierce, our subject’s father, settled in Dyersburg, where he remained until 1853, when he removed to the farm where George W. Pierce, Jr., now resides. Soon after his marriage he began his career as a flat-boat man between Dyersburg and Hart’s Point at the mouth of the Obion River, and later substituted a steamboat, owning the best one that ever plied on the Forked Deer River. He made this a life-long business, and was very successful. A man of clear judgment and integrity, when quite young he held the position of sheriff, and also of trustee. He was re-elected to the latter office in 1882, and held it at the time of his death, September 30, 1883. He owned 200 acres of good land near Dyersburg and also land in Texas and Arkansas. Mrs. Pierce died in 1861, and in 1866 he married Miss Jennie Hawks, by whom he has two children living. She died a few days after her husband. Our subject, George W. Pierce, Jr., received his education at Dyersburg. October 1, 1879, he married Miss Louella, daughter of James Doyle, and has one child, Clarence D. He resides on the farm where he was born, and owns 106 acres of land one mile east of Dyersburg. His first presidential vote was cast for Grover Cleveland. Mrs. Pierce was born in Newbern, in 1858, educated in Dyersburg, and at the time of her marriage lived in Ripley. She died in December, 1884. Mr. Pierce is a Methodist, and very popular, being a man of good business qualifications.
