L. W. Daniel resides two miles west of Bell’s Depot and was born May 10, 1818, in North Carolina. His father, Ephram Daniel, was born about 1768 in North Carolina, and was a prominent man. He took considerable interest in the political issues of the day and represented the Democratic party in the Legislature for a number of years prior to his death, and was a member of the same at the time of his death in 1823. His wife, Zilpha (Fort) Daniel, was born in North Carolina about 1774 and died in 1824. L. W. Daniel was the eleventh of twelve children—ten sons and two daughters. He was reared in the mercantile business and at the age of eighteen immigrated to Tennessee and located in Denmark, Madison County, where he remained until about 1841 when he settled on a farm in Haywood County, where he remained two years. At the expiration of this time he went to the Lone Star State and after residing there for two years, he returned to Tennessee. In 1853 he removed to his present residence. He was elected magistrate in Haywood County in 1870 and was a member of the county court at the time of the organization of Crockett County. He is at present a member of the county court and was elected coroner of the county in 1878, which office he still holds. July 11, 1839, he married Sarah Jane White, daughter of Thompson D. and Sarah White. To them were born fifteen children—ten sons and five daughters. Those living are Lewis W., Sarepta J. (Mrs. Kail), Sarah E. (Mrs. Felts), William L., Samuel W., James A., Minerva Naomi, Margaret Mosella, Milton B., and Ephram H. Mr. Daniel is one of the oldest Masons in the county and has been secretary of his lodge for fifteen consecutive years. He served in the Confederate Army in Company A, Seventh Tennessee Cavalry a short time, when he was discharged on account of his age. He is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
