Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. H. Chandler, miller of Maury City, Tenn., was born in the Old Dominion, March 6, 1843, and is one of three children of J. D. and M. G. Chandler. The former was of Scotch descent, born in Virginia February 27, 1820, and was supervisor of the Piedmont Air Line Railway, and spent many years in the railroad business. He is now residing on the farm. His wife’s maiden name was Adams. She was born in Orange County, N. C., in 1828. J. H. Chandler was educated in the common schools of Virginia and the Black Walnut Institute. In 1869 he removed to Kentucky, and after residing there three years came to Crockett County, and engaged in the milling business in partnership with J. F. Robertson, continuing until 1881, when he came to Maury City, and he and H. C. Murchison purchased the mill property of J. L. Poston & Son, and are doing a large grist-milling, lumber, saw and ginning business. January 6, 1875, he married Miss M. E., daughter of David and Elizabeth Gillespie, of Humboldt. Mrs. Chandler was born in Madison County, March 17, 1859, and is the mother of four children: Luther, Edna, Maggie and Carrie. Mr. Chandler is a successful business man, and is a Democrat in politics. He belongs to the Missionary Baptist Church and Masonic and I. O. O. F. fraternities. His wife belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church.
