Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. J. B. Hay is a Bedford County Tennesseean, born in 1815, and is one of a large family of children of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Harbor) Hay, who were born in Virginia in 1786 and South Carolina in 1792, respectively. Jeremiah Hay came to Tennessee with his father when a boy, and was one of the early settlers of Williamson County. He was a farmer by occupation, served in the war of 1812, and died in 1886. The mother is still living, and is residing with her daughter, Mrs. Wynn, in Marshall County. J. B. Hay was educated in the schools of his native county. January 8, 1846, he married Margaret E., daughter of Richard and Sarah Coop. Mrs. Hay was born in Shelbyville, Tenn., in 1817, and is the mother of six children: R. I., M. E., Nancy J. (Mrs. Poston, of Maury County, Tenn.); R. C. (Mrs. Davis Straing); Sarah A. (Mrs. Logan Hopkins) and M. F. F. (Mrs. Henry Williams). In 1841 Mr. Hay located where he now resides. He is energetic and persevering, and is a good business man. He owns about 400 acres of valuable and well improved land. He was school commissioner in his district for fifteen years. He is highly respected and much esteemed for his many good qualities, and in his political views is an ardent Republican.
