Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

G. W. Bettis is a Wilson County Tennesseean, born in 1822, one of nine children, seven of whom are living, born to Alfred and Maggie (Conyers) Bettis. The former was born in North Carolina, and came to Tennessee when a boy, and to West Tennessee in 1835. After residing in Mississippi for some time, he moved to Arkansas, where he died in 1857. His wife was born in Wilson County, and died in 1875. G. W. Bettis was educated in the district schools and at Chestnut Bluff, and January 9, 1842, married Druscilla, daughter of P. R. Williams. Mrs. Bettis was born April 19, 1822, and died in October, 1872, having borne the following children: Louena (Mrs. George Rooen), M. V., Dr. B. C., Maggie (Mrs. J. W. McFarlin), Delphia (Mrs. I. N. Vail), America (Mrs. E. H. Rice), and Cleora. Mr. Bettis located on his present farm of 500 acres, in October, 1842. October 23, 1873, he married Susan E., daughter of Joseph and Martha (Richardson) Pearson. The former was born in 1811 and died in 1860, and the latter was born in 1821 and is now living with her daughter, Mrs. Rosa Manning. Mrs. Bettis was born in Madison County in 1855, and is the mother of the following children: Willie M., born August 27, 1874; George R., born October 2, 1877; James H., born November 25, 1879; Sallie P., born August 17, 1882, and John L., born July 15, 1885. Mr. Bettis is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for James K. Polk. He and wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. James Romines was born in February, 1819, and has always resided with Mr. Bettis, who is his cousin.
