A. T. Horine, horticulturist and farmer, is a son of John and Catherine (Routzahn) Horine, and is one of their eight children. He was born in Maryland in 1835, and was educated in the common schools. In August, 1858, he married Deborah F. Smeltzer, and by her became the father of five children, four of whom are living: Lillie May, Victor C., Beatrice and Alonzo T. After his marriage Mr. Horine removed to Cambridge City, Ind., and two years later to Jackson County, Ill., where he remained until 1867, engaged in fruit growing. He then came to Gadsden, and was the first to introduce the growing of small fruit, which was then considered a very profitless undertaking, but which has proven to be one of the most profitable enterprises in West Tennessee. He is one of the most extensive fruit growers of the county, and owns 210 acres of land near Gadsden, also a fruit farm in Illinois. His land is well cultivated, and he has a commodious and pleasant home. He has been a lifelong Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for James Buchanan. He is a member of the I. O. O. F., and he and wife belong to the Lutheran Church. Their daughter, Miss Lillie, is a graduate of the normal method of music, in which she is an accomplished and very successful teacher. She is also a proficient artist, and some of her paintings possess rare merit. Mr. Horine’s father was born in Maryland about 1803, and spent his entire life in his native State. He was a farmer, was married about 1825, and died in July, 1885. His wife was born in Maryland in 1805, and there still resides. Both parents were of German ancestry.
