Below is a family biography included in the Biographical Annals of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania published in 1904 by T. S. Benham & Company and The Lewis Publishing Company; Elwood Roberts, Editor.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. ROBERT C. LOWNES was born at Centre Square, in Whitpain township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, April 24, 1869. He was educated in the common schools of the neighborhood until he was sixteen years of age. He then learned the trade of blacksmithing, and after he was come to man’s estate he followed blacksmithing at Skippackville for ten or eleven years. He then purchased the hotel at Centre Point, in Worcester township, conducting it for five years.

He next purchased the hotel at West Point, in Gwynedd township, conducting it very successfully for two years. At the end of that time he removed to Lansdale, and purchased the Norwood Hotel, which he has conducted ever since. He has, since purchasing the property, made many improvements, so that it will rank with the finest hotels of Montgomery county.

Mr. Lownes has been twice married. His first wife was Anna C. Bean, a daughter of Henry K. Bean, of Norristown. By this marriage there were two children- Clarence, who is living, and Harry, who died young. The second marriage of Mr. Lownes occurred in 1898 to Susan (Trumbower) Gotwals, widow of John Gotwals, of Lansdale, Pennsylvania. The couple have one child, Ruth.

Mr. Lownes is a member of the Masonic order, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and of the Improved Order of Red Men. In politics he is a stanch Republican, but has never sought or held office. He and his family are members of the Reformed church. Mr. Lowes is genial and companionable in disposition, and has made many friends in the community in which he now resides, as well as in the other neighborhoods in which his lot has been cast.
