Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. CAPT. WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM (deceased) was born in the city of Pittsburgh, June 3, 1827, near the spot where the county court house is now located. Early in life he became engaged in the coal business, and assumed command of a steamer plying the Monongahela. He became widely known as a capable and efficient commander. Later in life he commanded several of the largest steamers running between Pittsburgh and Louisville, in which capacity he was engaged up to the time of his death, which occurred March 11, 1878. From 1871 to the time of his death he was a resident of Sewickley, Pa., and during those years a worthy and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His wife, nee Miss Eliza J. McIntosh, was a native of Pittsburgh. They were the parents of eight children, of whom Samuel R. was educated in this county, and is now a corresponding clerk in the Marine National bank, a position he has held since October.
