WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM, retired farmer, P. O. Monroeville, was born in Patton township, Jan. 6, 1817, a son of Robert and Susannah (McElroy) Cunningham, of Irish and Scotch descent, respectively, the former of whom, a native of Eastern Pennsylvania, died here in 1822, at the age of sixty-two years; he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, served in the revolutionary army, and afterward was colonel of militia. William McElroy, father of Mrs. Susannah Cunningham, settled very early on the farm where Mr. Cunningham now resides, and was forced to remain away from it seven years on account of the hostility of the Indians. Mr. Cunningham’s father died before the subject of this sketch was five and one-half years old, and he has since resided on this farm. In July, 1880, he married Caroline R. Bowser, of Armstrong county, and one child was born, now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham are connected with the Presbyterian Church. He is a republican, and has served as township treasurer and justice of the peace.
