Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. ROBERT THOM, farmer, post office North Star, is a son of Houston and Ann Thom. Sometime previous to 1797 Robert Thom, a native of Lancaster county, Pa., born in 1764, of Irish ancestry, settled on a tract of land, containing 150 acres, which he afterward purchased; in 1797, from the heirs of Robert Worthington. This land, situated on the waters of Raccoon creek, was a part of 2,000 acres owned by Robert Worthington, who, in 1774, received a grant from Right Hon. John Dunmore, then governor of Virginia. Robert married Anna Smiley, of Washington county, who bore him eleven children, and of these Houston, the seventh eldest, was born in 1807, died in 1873. Robert Thom and his wife Anna died in 1849, on the same day, aged, respectively, eighty-five and seventy-six years, and were buried side by side in the same grave. Houston married Ann Aten, daughter of William Aten, of Washington county, and eight children blessed their marriage, four of whom are yet living. Robert, the namesake of his grandfather, being the only male member of the family surviving. He was educated at the public schools and Linnean Academy; has followed farming all his life, and owns the property purchased by his grandfather. He is, as were his parents and grandparents, a member of the U. P. Church.
