ROBERT M. COYLE, cashier of the Farmers’ & Mechanics’ Bank, Sharpsburg, was born in that town, August 1, 1839. His father, Samuel Coyle, a native of Logan’s Ferry, of Irish extraction, was a tanner by trade, and as early as 1832 came to Sharpsburg. He married Nancy McElheny, a native of Allegheny county, who bore him two children, Robert being the elder. He received his education at the first public school of Sharpsburg, and at an early age learned the trade of tanner and currier. This he followed until 1857, when he was employed as clerk by Lewis, Dalzell & Co., and in 1867 he was appointed manager of the company’s store until 1878, when he resigned to accept his present position. Mr. Coyle is a republican; was burgess of the town in 1882, and has held other positions of trust. He married, in 1862, Sarah McMasters, who died in 1873, the mother of four children, three of whom are living: Mary, Sarah and Robert, Jr. Mr. Coyle’s second wife is Annie, daughter of Eph. Love, an early settler in this community. Mr. and Mrs. Coyle have one child, George. They are members of the Presbyterian Church.
