Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. JOSEPH ECOFF, superintendent of water works, McKeesport, was born in East Fairfield township, Columbiana county, Ohio, February 20, 1838, a son of William and Maria (Boughman) Ecoff, natives of Chester county, Pa., who settled in Columbiana county, Ohio, in 1837, and who, in 1847, removed to New Castle county, Del. After attaining the age of fourteen he, for a period of nine years, employed himself in the various branches of sheet-iron manufacture for C. & J. Marshall & Co., extensive sheet-iron manufacturers of Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia. In 1866 he located in McKeesport, and was in the employ of W. D. Wood & Co., as a roller of fine Russia iron, from April 5, 1866, until September 13, 1882, and was then elected superintendent of the McKeesport water- works, in which position he has satisfactorily served the public six years. Mr. Ecoff married, July 3, 1863, Susan B., daughter of Ephraim and Elizabeth (Springer) Yarnall, of Wilmington, Del., and has four children: Anna (Mrs. William England), William, George and Elizabeth. In 1877 Mr. Ecoff was elected a member of the borough council, and took an active part in the establishment of the water-works, and during his five years of service in the council gave complete satisfaction to his constituents. He has been vice-president of the Mutual Building & Loan association and president of the Enterprise Building & Loan association, and is now president of the New Enterprise Building & Loan association. He is a member of the Royal Arcanum; in politics an independent democrat.
