Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. ISAAC LINDSAY, merchant, Hulton, was born in County Down, Ireland, in August, 1829, a son of Isaac and Mary (Stewart) Lindsay (both deceased). Mr. Lindsay came to this country in 1849, having finished his education in Ireland. For seven years he was employed in a wholesale store in Pittsburgh, and ten months later moved to Allegheny City, where he did a good trade for ten years. He was then in business five years at Emsworth, and, selling out there, in 1876 came to Verona, where he has been very successful. He was married Sept. 4, 1856, to Charlotte Balmer, a native of County Down, Ireland (coming to America in 1852), a daughter of Matthew and Mary (Mercer) Balmer, both deceased. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay: Mary, who died aged fourteen months; Walter Mercer, who died aged five years; Stewart Washington, who died aged three years; Walter Mercer, who graduated at Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa., in 1887, then studied law with Robb & Fitzsimmons, of Pittsburgh; and Isaac Stewart, who graduated at Duff’s College, of Pittsburgh, in 1888, and is in his father’s store. Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay are members of the U. P. Church, of which he is a trustee; he is a republican.
