Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. HERMAN HENRY NIEMANN, merchant-tailor, Pittsburgh, son of Rudolph and Jane (Hempes) Niemann, was born in the province of Osnabruck, Hanover, Prussia, Feb. 24, 1832. When Herman H. was eight years old his father died, and six years later his mother emigrated with her family to America, locating in Pittsburgh. Herman H. is the fourth in the family of six, and is the eldest now living. He was early apprenticed to a tailor, and in 1854 he opened a tailor-shop on Smithfield street, near his present location, where he has been for the last twelve years. Mr. Niemann was one of the original stockholders in the German National Bank, and has been thirteen years a director; he is also president of the Fifth Avenue Bank, and vice-president of the German-American Insurance company. He has served three terms, and is now a member of the common council of Pittsburgh. He is identified with the First German Lutheran Church of Pittsburgh, and is a republican. In 1861 Mr. Niemann married Martha, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Horning) Flowers, of Allegheny county, Pa., descendants of early German families. Adolphus Edward, eldest child of Mr. Niemann, is employed in the Manufacturers’ Natural Gas company, and the other, Charles Franklin, is a jeweler.
