Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. ALFRED SMITH, contractor, post office Hulton, was born in Armstrong county, Pa., March 1, 1848, son of John and Ellen (Minteer) Smith, former of whom was a farmer, born at Deer Creek, this county, died in 1860, aged forty-four years; latter was born in Armstrong county, and now resides in Worthington; both members of the U. P. Church. Alfred Smith received a common-school education, and learned the carpenter’s trade when he was eighteen years old. Ten years later he came to Verona, and for two years was employed in the Allegheny Valley railroad shops; he then began house building, and in 1882, in partnership with Mr. Miligan, he began contracting, in which he has been very successful. Mr. Smith was married, March 4, 1873, to Charlotte Augusta, daughter of John and Charlotte (Dennison) Arnold, of Freeport, Pa., both now deceased. They had four children, two now living: Elsie Augusta and James Dennison; the deceased are Katie B. and Howard Arnold. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are members of the U. P. Church; he is a republican, and a member of the Jr. O. U. A. M.
