Below is a family biography included in The History of Brown County, Ohio published by W. H. Beers & Co. in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. SIMON R. PURCELL, farmer, P. O. Sardinia, was born in Washington Township July 29, 1838. He was a son of Alfred and Mary A. Purcell; the former a native of Mason County, Ky., was born December 17, 1808, and the latter a native of Westmoreland County, Penn., was born May 24, 1804. They were married October 22, 1830, and had three children; of these two are living. Mr. Purcell came with his father’s family to this county in 1820, and died November 1, 1878. His parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Purcell, removed to Logan County, Ohio, where they died. Simon was reared to maturity on a farm. From his twelfth to his thirty-sixth year, he was afflicted with epilepsy, but securing the right remedy, he has been permanently cured. August 11, 1881, he was married to Mrs. Mary E. Miguery, widow of Charles Miguery, and a daughter of Peter and Margaret Ballein. She had one child by her former husband — Charles O., born February 25, 1880. In 1868, Mr. Purcell took up surveying, and has established a large business. In 1879, he was a candidate for County Surveyor, but was defeated. He and his wife are consistent members of the M. E. Church. He has been an active and useful worker in the Sabbath school for several years. Politically, he is a Republican. He owns a farm of sixty acres, and follows its pursuits.
