My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography included in the book,  Biographical Souvenir of the Counties of Buffalo, Kearney, Phelps, Harlan and Franklin, Nebraska published in 1890 by F. A. Battey & Company.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ELBERT S. PHELPS was born in Portage county, Ohio, June 6, 1847, and came to Franklin county, Nebr., on the twenty-fifth day of April, 1872, being one of the first to take a homestead in the northern part of the county. There was no settlement then, and there were no neighbors nearer than ten miles, but there was plenty of buffalo and other wild game. He has stood in his own door and shot buffalo while they were passing. Lowell, thirty-five miles distant, was the nearest trading point. Indians were plenty, often passing his house, and he has cooked many a meal for red men. He passed through the grasshopper period and saw some very hard times, but gallantly overcame them.

He was married in the fall of 1879 to Miss Ellen Chisholm, a native of New York State, and to this union have been born four children, viz. — Carrie, Ray, Guy and Edgar. Mr. Phelps owns one hundred and sixty acres of improved land as good as can be found in the county. He is democratic in politics, and is well posted in the principles of his party.
