Below is a family biography included in The History of Wright County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Dr. Lewis E. Musick, physician and surgeon at Mountain Grove, Mo., and brother to Thomas H. and William H. H. Musick, was born in Montgomery County, Mo., January 27, 1836. The genealogy of the Musick family is traced back several generations to its origin in George Musick, who was picked up when a child as the only survivor of a shipwreck on the coast of Wales, and was called Musick because of his musical talents. Growing to manhood in that country, he had five sons: Alexis, George, David, Abram and Ephraim, all of whom immigrated to America, and settled in Spottsylvania County, Va., early in the eighteenth century. Thomas R. Musick, son of Ephraim, who married a Roy, was born in Spottsylvania County, Va., in 1757. He united with the Baptist Church, and entered the ministry at seventeen years of age. Soon after he immigrated to North Carolina, where he enlisted in the army, served through the Revolutionary War, was twice a prisoner to the British, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis. After the war he removed to Kentucky, where he married Mary Nevel. About 1801 he came to Missouri, and preached the first Protestant sermon west of the Mississippi. He was for many years pastor of Fee Fee Baptist Church, in St. Louis County, and was buried there in 1843. Capt. Lewis Musick, son of Thomas R., and grandfather to the subject of this sketch, was born in Kentucky about 1783. He married Mary Fitzwater, whose maternal grandfather was a Bean. Lewis Musick was a captain in the military service, fighting the Indians in Missouri from 1811 to 1815. He died in California in 1849. Rev. Lafreniere C. Musick, the father of Dr. L. E. Musick, was born in St. Louis County in 1815, and is now living in Audrain County, Mo. Dr. Musick’s mother, Jane D. Hayden, daughter of Elisha, Jr., and Mary W. Hayden, was born in Todd County, Ky., in 1815. Elisha, Jr., was the son of Elisha Hayden, Sr., who married Jane Donaldson, the daughter of Samuel Donaldson. Her mother was a Bailey. Mary W. Hayden was a daughter of Joshua and Susannah Harrison, and was born in South Carolina. Joshua was born in Virginia, and his mother was Mary Elza. Elisha Hayden, Sr., was born in Virginia, and was the son of William Hayden, who married Mary Ann Waller. Elisha, Sr., was a Revolutionary soldier. The Haydens originally spelled the name Headen, and the family was of Irish extraction. Jane Donaldson’s maternal grandmother was a Clayton. Susannah Harrison was a sister to Elisha Hayden, Sr. The Harrisons were related to Gov. Ben. Harrison of Virginia, and the Donaldsons, a branch of the family of that name distinguished in the history of Tennessee. Dr. Lewis E. Musick is a man of more than average natural endowments, and laid the foundation of a good English education in the common schools. He took sides with the Union during the Civil War, entered the service in 1861, and served until May 15, 1865, when failing health forced him to abandon his post of duty. He served as sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Dr. Musick was married in 1864 to Miss Margaret H. Lewis, a native of Missouri, born in 1850, and to them was born one child, Ada, wife of E. L. Shinkle, of Pittsburg, Kas. Mrs. Musick is the youngest child of the second husband of Rebecca H. Lewis, whose first husband was her full cousin, and was named Walpole. The Walpoles are of English extraction, and related to the family of Sir Robert Walpole. Dr. Lewis E. Musick graduated from and took his degree in the American Medical College, St. Louis, Mo. He came to Mountain Grove in 1881, and here found an extensive business awaiting him. Dr. and Mrs. Musick are well preserved people for their years He attributes this remarkable preservation of youthful vigor to a strict observance of nature’s laws and superior hygienic treatment. He is a member of the G. A. R., and is a Republican in his politics.
