Nicholas Rhodes was born in Knox County, Tenn., March 19, 1823, being a son of John Rhodes, of North Carolina. The latter went to Tennessee with his father when a lad of twelve years, grew to manhood in that State, and there married Mary Cox, a native of Knox County, Tenn. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, under Gen. Jackson, and also served in the Florida War. He died in Knox County, Tenn., in 1870, at the age of seventy-seven years. Both grandfathers (Rhodes and Cox) were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Nicholas Rhodes resided in Knox County until twenty-five years of age, and then began the battle of life for himself. He was married on the 9th of September, 1849, in Greene County, Mo., whither he had come in 1848, to Margaret Caldwell, of Greene County, Mo. She came to this county with her parents in 1839. Robert Caldwell, her father, served in the War of 1812, and also in the late Civil War, and died in 1866, at the age of seventy-seven years. Sarah Caldwell, wife of Robert Caldwell, died in 1880, at the age of eighty-eight years. Mr. Rhodes now has a good farm of 160 acres, on the Pomme de Terre River, on which he has resided since March, 1856. By industry he has succeeded in clearing his farm, and now has eighty acres of land under cultivation, and a neat one-story residence. He and wife have a family of three sons and one daughter, whose names are as follows: Robert E., John F., Sarah H. (wife of J. M. Morton) and William T., a young man twenty-three years of age. During the late Civil War Mr. Rhodes served for some time in the Home Guards, and afterward in the Enrolled Militia, and at the end of nine months received his discharge on account of disability.
