James P. Callaway is a son of Parham and Nancy (Kirk) Callaway, both of whom were born in North Carolina, the parents having been reared and married in that State. They became residents of Webster County, Mo., December 1, 1852, and here the father died May 1, 1864, having served as a soldier for a short time before his death. James P. Callaway was born October 4, 1849, in Stanley County, N. C., but received his education and rearing in Webster County, Mo. January 15, 1878, he espoused Miss Martha M. Bruton, daughter of Dr. D. P. Bruton (deceased) and Mary (Miller) Bruton. She was born and reared in Webster County, Mo., being now the mother of four children: Roxie R., Atlee B., Parham P. and Lawrence A. In the fall of 1880 Mr. Callaway was nominated and elected sheriff of Webster County, and at the expiration of his term as sheriff was elected county collector, serving by re-election until 1887, and filled the duties of both these offices very efficiently and to the satisfaction of all concerned. He located on his farm about 1887, and is now the owner of 520 acres of land. He has a commodious residence, good barns for his grain and stock and a nice young orchard. He and wife are members of the Christian Church.
