Below is a family biography included in The History of Washington County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Samuel D. Evans was born in Potosi, Washington Co., Mo., January 27, 1833. His father, Joseph Evans, a butcher by occupation, was a native of the State of New York, who removed to St. Louis, Mo., in the year 1820, and in 1824 settled in Potosi, where he worked at his trade until his death, which occurred in 1863; he married Abagail Dunn, a native of Piscataway, N. J., who died in 1867. In a family of five children Samuel D. was the third son and child, and was reared in Washington County to the occupations of farming and mining. In 1855 he went to California where he remained until the year 1869, when he returned to his home, where he has since been engaged in the pursuit of agriculture and owns 102 acres of well-cultivated land. In 1875 he married Miss Sarah P. Tilson, who was also born in Washington County, and is a daughter of Lewis and Amanda Tilson. Mr. and Mrs. Evans have six children, viz.: Elmer, E., Edward E., Essie, Levi, Bradford and Maggie.
