Below is a family biography included in The History of Washington County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John L. Martin is a son of Noah Martin, who was born in North Carolina, and when fifteen years of age went to Kentucky, whence he moved to Washington County, Mo., where he is numbered among the early settlers as well as worthy citizens of the county. February 14, 1819, he married Miss Margaret Hinkson, a native of Kentucky, and of the nine children born to their union six are now living, viz.: Mary (the wife of William Nicholson), Catherine A. (who married Volney D. Mitchell, of Franklin County), Margaret Eliza (now Mrs. Charles H. Springer), Sarah (who became Mrs. Thomas Nicholson), John L. and James W. The mother died in 1875, and the father in 1880. John L. was born in Washington County, February 22, 1835, and was reared on a farm, to which occupation he has always devoted his attention. He owns 400 acres of land and is recognized as one of the leading and successful agriculturists of the county.
