Below is a family biography included in The History of Osage County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William Joachim, a dealer in grain, seeds, salt, etc., of Chamois, Osage Co., Mo., was born in Belle Lippe Detmold, Prussia, in 1836, and is the only child of Phillip and Wilhelmina (Sprenger) Joachim, both natives of Prussia, where the father died when our subject was but thirteen years of age; the mother afterward married a Mr. Lange, and they immigrated to this country, locating in Osage County, Mo., where both died, the mother about 1877. William Joachim received a good common-school education in his native country, and when young learned the stone-mason’s trade. He left the country of his birth in 1855, and upon his arrival in the United States located in Gasconade County, Mo., where, in 1859, he married Elizabeth Rufi, from Steffisburg, County Berne, Switzerland. To them have been born eight children, two sons and six daughters. The same year of his marriage Mr. Joachim located at Leach’s Mill, in Osage County, Mo., where he engaged in farming until 1868; he then removed to a farm five miles south of Chamois, which he worked until 1881. In the latter year he settled in Chamois, where he owns considerable property; he also owns 287 acres in Neosho County, Kan. During the late war Mr. Joachim served four months in the Missouri State Militia, and has served two years as mayor of Chamois. He is one of the leading farmers of Osage County, and is an enterprising business man, highly respected by all who know him. He and wife have been members of the Methodist Church for years, and their friends are many.
