Below is a family biography included in The History of Osage County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Flavius Josephus Laughlin, a farmer of Linn, Mo., was born in Osage County in 1848, and is a son of Robert R. and Elizabeth (McKnight) Laughlin. Robert R. Laughlin, a native of Caldwell County, Ky., was born in 1812, and was of Irish descent; he came to Osage County, Mo., in 1833, and settled five miles north of Linn, where he entered land and cleared and built a home; he devoted his attention to farming, and passed the remainder of his life in Osage County, dying in July, 1881. His wife, Elizabeth Laughlin, was born in North Carolina in 1818, and removed to Osage County, Mo., with her father, Thomas McKnight, who located in Linn Township. Mrs. Laughlin died in 1884, and of her nine children four are now living, viz.: Eliza (wife of Douglas Wright), George D., Samuel D. and Flavius J. The latter lived with his parents until of age, and in March, 1870, married Bell Ferguson, daughter of John C. and Sarah Ann (Vaughn) Ferguson. Mrs. Laughlin was born in Osage County, Mo., in 1848. To this union have been born seven children, viz.: Eva, John, Nela, Peter, Alice, Herman and Bella. After his marriage Mr. Laughlin lived on Pointer’s Creek until 1881, when he removed to Linn, where he now resides. He was engaged in school teaching for some time, and was very successful in that profession; he taught the first term at Providence, Osage County, and six terms in the school known as the Pointer’s Creek School, receiving good compensation. In 1885 he erected in Linn a large two-story farm dwelling, and owns 320 acres of land. He is a Republican politically, and in 1880 was elected surveyor of Osage County, and served a term of four years. He is a member of the Masonic lodge of Linn, and is one of the live and enterprising men of the place.
