Below is a family biography included in The History of Osage County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Charles S. Leeman, a contractor and builder of Chamois, Osage County, Mo., was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1840, and is the fourth in a family of five sons and three daughters born to Andrew and Charity A. (Storms) Leeman, the former a native of Pennsylvania, and the latter born in Canada. The parents were married in Canada, where the father, who was a farmer, died in 1852 or 1853; the mother died in Wisconsin in 1885, at the age of seventy-six. Charles S. Leeman attended the common schools of Ontario until the death of his father, when he was obliged to work on the farm. He learned the carpenter’s trade, and when about nineteen years of age went to Mississippi, where he worked until the outbreak of the war, when he returned to Canada and remained until 1866. In the latter year he went to Chamois, Osage Co., Mo., where he purchased and operated a sawmill until about 1883, manufacturing nearly all the lumber used in building the town, and in the meantime doing an extensive business contracting and building, employing five or six men. Before abandoning the milling Mr. Leeman purchased a stock of general building material, and until 1887 conducted that business. He owns one of the finest houses in Chamois, and is worth considerable property. In 1877 he married W. V. Callicott, daughter of Giles and Martha Callicott, natives of Virginia, who removed to Callaway County, Mo. This union has been blessed with three children, viz., two sons and one daughter. Mr. Leeman is one of the aldermen of Chamois, and is an influential citizen. Hens a member of the A. F. & A. M., A. O. U. W. and K. of P., and has held all the offices in Masonry except Worshipful Master, which he declined. Mrs. Leeman is a member of the Christian Church, and a lady of refinement and culture.
