Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Zachariah Jarrett Gold on his father’s side is a grandson of Zachariah and Hettie Gold, and a great-grandson of Michael Gold, a native of Sheffield, England; on his mother’s side he is a grandson of Jarrett and Nancy Dowd (Smith) Smith; a great-grandson of Work and Catherine (Dowd) Smith, and a great-great-grandson of Owen and Judith (Fay) Dowd, who were married January 30, 1756, and lived in North Carolina, near Giford’s Court-house. Michael Gold was a soldier in the American army during the Revolutionary War of 1776. Zachariah Gold was a soldier under Gen. Andrew Jackson, in his expedition against the Indians in Alabama, and in the battle of Taladega, Ala., his brother David was killed by his side, and he received a gun-shot wound in the foot; he was one of the early settlers of Lincoln County, Tenn. They were farmers and mechanics. Our subject attained his growth in Tennessee, and then engaged in the profession of teaching. In 1878 he moved West, spending about fifteen months in Texas and then returned and located in Newton County, where he has since remained; he has taught to some extent since coming to this county. In 1884 he married Miss Minerva Catherine Stroud, the daughter of Joseph Herly and Sarah Jane (Moore) Stroud. Mr. Stroud’s mother was Mrs. Herly; Mrs. Herly’s mother was Mrs. Bryan, and Mrs. Bryan (whose maiden name is not known) was a native of Germany. On her mother’s side Mrs. Gold is a granddaughter of William and Minerva (Ford) Moore, former of whom was a Cumberland Presbyterian preacher. To Mr. and Mrs. Z. T. Gold has been born one daughter, Clara Melissa. Mr. Gold is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance, and is secretary of Newton County Alliance; he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
