Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William Borden is of German descent. His grandfather, Adam Borden, a native of Germany, who became a resident of America when a boy, was a soldier in the War of 1812, and afterward a farmer in Jackson County, Tenn. He married Polly Hutchinson, and by their union had five children. He died in 1859, being about eighty years of age. Clairborn, his son, was born in Jackson County, Tenn., and was married to Eleanor, daughter of John and Polly Griffith, and had the following named children: John W., Adam T. and William. The latter was born in Tennessee in 1838, and there received a common-school education. He came to Newton County, Mo,, in 1857, and two years later was married to Martha Morris, a daughter of Andrew J. and Martha (Danley) Morris, and Lafayette, May E., Amanda J., Sarah and Elizabeth A. are their children. In 1861 Mr. Borden enlisted in the Confederate Army, First Missouri State Militia, under Gen. Raines, and participated in the battle of Wilson’s Creek. He afterward enlisted in Company E, Sixteenth Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and was at Prairie Grove, Helena, Pleasant Hill and Jenkins’ Ferry. Since the war Mr. Borden has followed the occupation of farming, and owns 160 acres of land. He is a Democrat, and an industrious, law abiding citizen.
