Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. W. H. Mitchell is a member of the firm of Mitchell & Porter, druggists, established in 1884, the firm being composed of W. H. Mitchell and Dr. H. L. Porter. They erected a large building in 1885, at a cost of $6,000, independent of the ground. This building is of brick, and is 24x100 feet, ground area, is two stories high, the upper floor being used for offices and for a hall, which is occupied by the local societies of I. O. O. F. and the A. O. U. W., K. of L. and the G. A. R. The firm carries a stock of drugs to the value of $6,000, and is a credit to Seneca. W. H. Mitchell is a native of Russellville, Logan Co., Ky., born December 9, 1846, and is the son of B. E. and Susan Frances (Sawyers) Mitchell, natives of Kentucky. The mother died when W. H. was young, and he came to Missouri with his father in 1870. The father is still a resident of Missouri. W. H. Mitchell at first engaged in farming, but entered the office of the St. Louis & Santa Fe Railroad in 1873, where he was operator for some time. He afterward filled the same position at Raleigh, St. James, Carthage, etc. In 1871 he engaged in business in Seneca as clerk for John T. Albert, with whom he remained three years; then embarked in general merchandising, which he followed until he commenced the drug business in 1887. He was alone until the present firm was established. February 25, 1870, while in Seneca, he married Miss Agnes Jeannetta Featherstone, a native of Illinois, and the daughter of Frank Featherstone, a resident of Seneca. To Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were born three children: Henry M., Norman E. and Rhoda J. Mr. Mitchell is a member of the city council, is a Democrat in politics, is treasurer of the I. O. O. F., also a member of the A. O. U. W., of which he has been master workman; has been school director, and is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
