S. H. Shedlebarr was born in Chicago, Ill., July 25, 1837, and is a son of Joseph and Eve (Meyers) Shedlebarr, natives of Bohemia and Pennsylvania, respectively. The father came to the United States in 1823, and moved west during the building of the National Road to Chicago. He subsequently became interested in and assisted in settling a Bohemian colony in Chicago. He afterward moved to Effingham and Jasper Counties, Ill., and here his son, S. W., was reared. Our subject followed different callings until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted in the Fifty-fourth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served until October, 1865, his command operating a great portion of the time in the trans-Mississippi department. After receiving his discharge he went to Colorado, but in 1869 came to Missouri, and lived in this State until 1872, at which time he went to Kansas, and remained two years, then came to Newton County, and for nine years has been connected with the railroad, being appointed in 1887 agent at Granby. Mr. Shedlebarr has proved to be a competent and obliging official. He was married June 17, 1873, to Jane Wheeland, of Illinois, and by her has a family of four children: Nora, Grant, Alberta and Charlie. Mr. Shedlebarr is a member of the A. F. & A. M.
