Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Richard Gilstrop was born in Jasper County, Mo., on the 9th day of April, 1847,and is a son of Jeremiah and grandson of Peter Gilstrop. The latter was born in North Carolina, and was married to Elizabeth Gross, a native of Virginia, by whom he became the father of six sons and six daughters. One of these sons, named Jeremiah, married Rachel Copple. They came to Missouri in 1854, and settled in Newton County, where the father died January 1, 1885, leaving ten children. Richard Gilstrop was reared to farm life, and, with the exception of three years spent in Kansas, has always resided in Newton County. He owns, with his brother, the old homestead farm, consisting of 217 1/2 acres of land, and is doing well financially. He was married, in 1870, to Miss Martha J. May, who was born in Newton County, and is the mother of the following named children: Anna E., Josephine, Jacob, Jeremiah and Albert.
