R. Mize, son of James and Patsie (Ingram) Mize, was born in Floyd County, Ind., September 23, 1820. His parents were both natives of Virginia, and were much esteemed citizens. R. Mize was reared in Fountain County, Ind., and when he was quite young his father died. In 1840 he, with his mother and three brothers, moved to Van Buren County, Iowa. From there they went to Davis County, Iowa, and here remained about twenty years. While living in Davis County Mr. Mize was married to Miss Martha A. Williamson, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Dooley) Williamson, of that county, the marriage being solemnized on March 6, 1845. After leaving Davis County, Iowa, the subject of this sketch spent a number of years in Illinois and Indiana, and in the fall of 1870 moved to Newtonia, Newton Co., Mo., locating on his present property, and here he has since remained, engaged in farming and stock raising. He has a pleasant and attractive residence property in the western part of the village. Mrs. Mize died in the fall of 1887, in her sixty-second year, leaving a family of five sons and four daughters. She was a worthy member of the Missionary Baptist Church. The children are named as follows: W. J., G. W. and R. M., well known in the State of Illinois as leading newspaper men. (W. J. has served as secretary of the Democratic State Central Committee of Illinois for a number of years, with headquarters at Chicago), Martha Elizabeth (wife of Rev. F. M. Bowman, of the Missionary Baptist Church of Raton, N. Mex.), A. D. (of Garden City, Kas.), Fidelia E., Mary Eva and Erminnie Belle (all teachers) and Leonard Walter (at home). Mr. Mize has given his children good educations.
