Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. Paul C. Yates. Among physicians throughout Newton County, Mo., Dr. Yates is well and favorably known as a successful member of the medical profession. A native of Randolph County, Mo., he was born March 1, 1886, and is a son of John M. Yates, a native of Virginia and a cousin of the celebrated Tom Marshall, of Kentucky, and an uncle of Richard Yates, the former governor and United States senator from Illinois. The father moved from Virginia to Kentucky in 1816, and in 1833 changed his residence to Randolph County, Mo. Paul C. was reared and educated in his native county, and after arriving at a suitable age, taught school for several years. During this time he formed a taste for the medical profession, and studied under Dr. Robert Terrill, of Randolph County. He attended lectures at St. Louis Medical College (then Pope’s College) and was graduated in the class of 1861. He entered the State Guards at the outbreak of the war, and served in Gen. John B. Clark’s command as assistant surgeon. He then entered the Confederate States Army service, and was promoted to surgeon, being assigned to duty with Col. Shaver’s Regiment, Gen. Tappan’s Brigade, Arkansas Volunteers. After his return from the army he located and practiced his profession for fourteen years in Jacksonville, Mo., but owing to impaired health he came to Neosho, Mo., in 1880, where he has since resided, being among the first in his profession in the county. He was married in 1865 to Alice L. Levy, of South Carolina, and by her has seven children: Virginia L., Ruby A., John M., Emma C., Mamie L., Willie E. and Paul T. Dr. Yates is a Royal Arch Mason, is a Select and Supreme Knight in the A. O. U. W., also belongs to the K. of L., and is a prominent Prohibitionist.
