Oric M. Hewlett, stock dealer and farmer, Newton County, Mo., and son of William M. and Elizabeth (Winters) Hewlett, was born in Lawrence County, Mo., July 11, 1857. His parents were natives of Kentucky and Tennessee, respectively and were both of old Scotch-Irish ancestry in these States. The parents of William M. Hewlett moved to Missouri at an early date, and settled on Centre Creek, Lawrence County. This was over fifty years ago, when the country was wild and unsettled, and when wild animals of all kinds abounded. Oric M. was reared on a farm, and secured a fair education in the common schools. He attained his growth in Newton County, and began raising and dealing in live stock, which occupation, together with farming, he has since followed. In this county he married Miss Mattie, daughter of J. J. Bell, Esq., whose sketch appears elsewhere in these pages, and the result of this union has been the birth of three sons and one daughter: William, Ralph, Joseph and Hattie May. Mr. Hewlett is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance, has served on the school board in his district, and he and wife are members of the Baptist Church, the same as their fathers.
