Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Mrs. Mary Haggard, widow of Zero B. Haggard, is a daughter of Abraham and Annie (Lloyd) Ledford, who ware natives of North Carolina, and the parents of twelve children. Mr. and Mrs. Haggard were married in 1852, and became the parents of seven children who lived to maturity: William L., James J., Martin, Horace W., Henry C., Sophronia and Lucy A. Mr. Haggard was born in Bent County, Tenn., and moved to Georgia, where he resided until 1870, when he came to Jasper County, Mo., and in 1884 to Newton County, and purchased his farm. He died in 1885. He was a Union man during the war, and was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. His son Martin was born in Tennessee in 1865, and was reared on a farm. He was married to Anna B., daughter of John T. and Nancy J. (Garrett) Clark, and by her became the father of one son. Mr. Haggard is a Republican, and an industrious and thrifty farmer.
