Joseph M. Berry is one of four children: William E., Emily J., Mary E. and Joseph M., born to the marriage of John Berry and Harriet Miller. The father always resided in Tennessee, on a farm, and in his political views was a Democrat. Joseph M. was born in Claiborne County, Tenn., in 1837, and was reared on his father’s farm. He came to Newton County, Mo., in 1872, and married Deborah A., a daughter of John and Phoebe (Waters) Weaver. Mr. and Mrs. Berry have one child, Mary S. They purchased their present farm, consisting of 142 acres, in 1886, and Mr. Berry is an industrious farmer. In his political views he is a Republican. His wife was born in Washington County, Md., and learned the milliner’s trade, accumulating by her own exertions $1,500, all of which she earned after the war. While traveling through Maryland with her mother they were arrested by the United Slates authorities as disloyal people, or Southerners, and had their property taken from them.
